Inter-Professional Management of Pain - a holistic approach
Pain is generally an unpleasant experience and is a complex phenomenon which is not completely understood. There is a requirement for health care professionals to work together with pain sufferers to address key issues. We understand that pain systems may be disrupted and provide inaccurate information and that there are multiple factors which can influence pain perception. Working together in collaboration with pain sufferers will enable us to achieve care which meets the needs of each individual. We advocate consideration of a humanisation approach (Todres et al 2009) for the management of pain (link to Prezzi) and consideration of six C's. There are six concepts that are needed to deliver the vision of compassionate care (Cummings and Bennett 2012). The six C's are care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment.
